Meet the BB&P team – today we say hello to Simon Cruise

Every so often we sit down with a different BB&P team member to find out more about them. This time, it’s Simon Cruise, Senior Developer.

Who are you and what do you do at BB&P?

My name is Simon Cruise and I’m the Senior Developer here at BB&P. This involves overseeing all aspects of development in our digital department.

As we’re a boutique agency, I have to get my hands dirty with many technologies. Ranging from HTML5 responsive websites, BDD using and iOS apps.

How did you end up in Cayman?

I worked with Rob Barton a very long time ago at TBWA\Manchester. Around 4 years ago he got in touch as they were looking for someone just like me. I couldn’t really say no could I?

What’s your favourite thing about living in Cayman?

Well I’m from Northern Ireland, Newtownards to be precise and isn’t it lovely??

It’s pretty miserable over there weather wise, so what’s the saying again?

What’s the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Put sun cream on.

What are the three tools you use in your job you couldn’t live without?

Eclipse – I use this when working with PHP, Java, Ruby, HTML, CSS, XML…… everything basically.

JIRA – Started working in a SCRUM environment 6 years ago and have used JIRA for 6 years, the two just go together.

Bitbucket – This is where we store all our repositories, our preference over GitHub as it hooks into JIRA.

What’s your favourite band at the moment?

Apparently the young’uns these days like Kendrick Lamar and maybe a bit of Grimes, that means I do too.

I’ll also listen to whatever tells me to that week.

What’s the best book you read recently?

I never read fiction, all books I read are nerdy and most people will find them boring.

But if you must know, anything by Martin Fowler as he knows his stuff.

What TV show are you hooked on at the moment?

Looking forward to Game of Thrones, Brooklyn Nine-Nine makes me giggle and started watching The Thick of it again for the 15th time.

Keith Lemon/Leigh Francis makes me laugh and this is me trying to be him.

What 3 sites do you check regularly to keep up to date with the industry? – This is definitely my most visited site of all the sites I use, more than Facebook or Google. There is an answer for everything here. – Always good to know what these guys are doing, I hear they’re kind of a big deal. – This one has been around forever, still a good place to find websites pushing the boundaries of the tech is currently available

What’s your go-to order at the bar at Friday happy hour?

If I can get a Kronenbourg, I’m winning.
